7 Fitness Tips for 2011 – The start of a new year typically consists of making resolutions to get in shape and stay healthy. But the truth is many people don’t know how to start a safe and effective workout regimen. Implementing a new fitness program doesn’t mean you simply hop on a treadmill and start running. There are questions to ask yourself, your trainer (if you choose to use one) and even your physician before you start planning your exercise routine. To help kick off 2011, here are a few tips for you to consider when determining a fitness plan that’s right for you:

Set achievable goals. By setting goals, you’ll have a better idea of what your exercise program should look like and what you will want to get out of it. Understanding your fitness objectives, such as losing weight, toning up or becoming stronger, will define what kind of regimen will work best and offer the most success in the long run. Be sure to make your goals specific and accomplishable.

Work with a certified personal trainer. A trainer is not always necessary, but it’s generally recommended to meet with a certified fitness professional when starting a new exercise program. He or she will be able to offer advice on the best ways to reach your goals, provide specific exercises and ensure that you’re performing them correctly. Be careful when picking your trainer?not just anyone will do! Here are some tips on how to pick a personal trainer, which includes making sure he or she is certified.

Keep a fitness journal. Before you begin, write out all of the exercises—including the number of reps and type of cardio?you plan to accomplish daily or weekly to help you visualize your new fitness program and see how much time you will need to dedicate to it. By writing in this journal each time you work out, you’ll be able to keep track of your progress, as well as adjust the level of intensity of any of the exercises as needed.

Consult your physician. Once you set your goals and desired fitness program, it’s important to meet with your physician before getting started. If you’ve ever had a heart condition, take blood pressure or heart medications, have joint or bone problems or are over age 45, then it’s especially important to visit or call your doctor before getting started. If you have a preexisting medical condition, there could be potential risks in adding physical activity to your daily routine.

Start slow. Upon creating your exercise program and getting your doctor’s blessing, it’s time to begin! If you’re not used to exercising regularly, set a goal to exercise once or twice a week. As your body adjusts to this schedule, slowly increase the number of times you exercise until you find a comfortable weekly routine.

Listen to your body. Like everything, fitness is different for everyone. It’s important to be in tune with and nurture your body. If you start feeling fatigued, lessen the intensity of your workouts or reduce the amount you exercise by one less day per week. When your body is ready for a little more physical activity, add another day onto your routine or find ways to safely challenge yourself during exercise.

Don’t get discouraged. If you miss a day at the gym, or even a whole week, don’t get down on yourself—just get back on track when you’re ready and keep your goals in mind. Chances are, once your fitness program becomes part of your daily routine, your body will start craving that extra physical activity and you’ll want to go for a run or hit the gym more often.

Best wishes to you in reaching your fitness goals & great health!!

Well today was my first chance to be able to sleep in & get some rest. Ever since my crohn’s starting going into remission in the middle of April 2010 I have been on an up rise of being more active & busy again. Yay!! It’s a great thing but at the same time I still need to pace myself and find balance on how I exert my energy. In my mind I’m gung ho to do stuff but my body & fatigue levels still talk to me and sometimes hit me like a hammer. I have days when I feel like I’ve been hit by a Mack Truck…and it depends on what I do I may feel that way by the middle of the day, end of the day….or some weeks I may just really feel it once Thurs. & Fri. rolls around.

I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Zumba or heard of Zumba but that is one of my new found passions for Cardio….plus I’m a Zumba Instructor now. If I do 2 Zumba classes in one day I’m plum tired…but I love it. Now I have to find a balance between my Zumba classes, my weight training, and trying to work and make money. It’s all such a fine line. I’m trying to build up classes to teach Zumba, start a boot camp, and get more personal training clients. All of which require promoting myself & strategically mapping out my game plan so that I do not over do myself in order to avoid the possibility of causing Crohn’s disease to relapse & flare up again.

Yes the mind is strong and wants to go, go, go…but at the end of the day I must listen to my body…which is why, when I get a chance to sleep and rest & give my body what it needs I listen. As much as I love sleep in and going about my business at my leisure…my mind can’t help but think that half the day is gone & wasted & I have things I need to do and now I don’t have time to get them done….BUT I’ve learned to not let it stress me out, and that things are not “AS URGENT or IMPORTANT” as we make them seem. It’s appreciating the fact that I woke up this morning, I’m not suffering, I’m feeling good & healthy, I’m not in the hospital, or spending days on end in bed, I have my family, friends, & loved ones, & my animals…..all the things I’m truly thankful & grateful for….everything else no pressure, and can wait till tomorrow.

Soooo that is my day today…now it’s time to eat a good salad, walk the dog, and go do a little shopping…relax and get ready for my busy day tomorrow.

Smile, Laugh, Love, Be blessed!!:hug3:

It seems every year of the new millennium has seen some huge events occur; little perhaps of the magnitude of September 11, 2001 or the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, but still, here are the ten biggest, most memorable events of the year MMIX (so far), in reverse order:

NUMBER 10

July 22 – Longest total solar eclipse of the 21st Century takes place

Lasting six minutes and 38 seconds this was the second of three (the first and third were more minor penumbral lunar) eclipses in one month and it was observed by millions over China, Japan, Nepal and India. The next comparably-sized solar eclipse will occur beyond our time in 2132.

NUMBER 9

January 20 – President Barack Obama is inaugurated 44th President of the USA

Heralding a new hope, President Obama comes into office amid depths of uncertainty surrounding the Global Financial Crisis. His slogan, ‘Yes, we can,’ is apt; he’s appears the man of the hour for such a time as this.

NUMBER 8

March 3 – Gunmen attack a bus carrying Sri Lankan international cricketers; eight people are killed

Not a large terrorist event but one that was significant by virtue of the target. International teams are now put on further notice as they travel to the world’s trouble spots.

NUMBER 7

February 7 – The Black Saturday bushfires kill 173 people and leave 7,500 homeless in Victoria, Australia

A shockingly devastating set of climatic conditions and a combination of electrically and deliberately lit fires spark unprecedented fire emergencies throughout the State. The event transforms the Australian culture toward bushfire from generally lax to vigilant almost overnight such was the depth of human tragedy experienced. The national response to the plight of the victims via charity is an unprecedented success.

NUMBER 6

May 25 – North Korea announces it has conducted its second successful nuclear weapon test

This was a significant event from the perspective of the future peace and sustainability of the world and major country diplomatic unity. North Korea continues to defy international convention and arrogantly sets itself as one of the key dictator and recalcitrant countries of the 21st Century.

NUMBER 5

September 29 & 30 – Tsunamis off Samoa and Sumatra kill over 1,000 people and destroy critical infrastructure

After the Boxing Day tsunamis of 2004 there is heightened awareness of the cost and scope of tsunami events in terms of human tragedy. This was fortunately almost nothing in comparison to the 2004 event in terms of human loss, where over 300,000 are thought to have lost their lives.

NUMBER 4

June 1 – Air France Flight 447 flying from Brazil plunges into the Atlantic Ocean killing 228

Mystery surrounded this event for days after and it still does. Only 51 bodies of the 228 killed have been recovered and the black box flight data recorder has also not been found, precluding the investigation significantly.

NUMBER 3

April 24 – The World Health Organization is concerned at the initial outbreak of Influenza (later known as Swine Flu [H1N1])

This was later deemed a global pandemic on June 11. Although this pandemic was the first of its order since the Hong Kong strain in 1967/68 its virulence was less than expected though many lost their lives and millions suffered a very debilitating influenza.

NUMBER 2

November 25 – Rumours begin to circulate about Tiger Woods extramarital affairs

No one likes to see a superstar, especially one with such a slick and clean image as Tiger had, plunge and lose an amazing amount of credibility, destroying his reputation–but this has happened. This event sparks a world of media and popular interest, inappropriate humour and condemnation.

NUMBER 1

June 25 – the death of “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson

For much of the world this was a shocking and horrifically sad end to the King of Pop, who was concluding his rehearsals of “This Is It,” his fifty London shows, the curtain call of his musical career. The event of the reporting of his death and the later memorial service (July 7) pushed internet traffic to unprecedented levels–an electronic tsunami.

So, there we have it–a big year in anyone’s language. What lies ahead in 2010, apart from changing our naming convention of the year? (i.e. instead of two-thousand-and-nine/ten we’ll start to call the years proceeding from now, twenty-ten, and so forth.)

Will there be a more massive or catastrophic natural disaster–and more to the point, will we be ready? (Can we be ready?) Which famous figures will die? Will there be a key assassination? Will the world be plunged for a time into ‘electronic darkness?’

It all remains to be seen.

Aaaaaand I have to add even though it’s not a famous worldly event or tragedy…it’s one of my most memorable 2009 moments in my life & as a IFBB Professional Bodybuilder by being struck down by the aweful disease called Crohn’s Disease it halted my competitive career as an IFBB Pro and turned my life & my world upside down in the year 2009 & part of 2010. As of now Dec. 2010 my Crohn’s disease is in remission and I’m feeling good and healthy again and with the hopes that it stays that way I’m setting my sights on getting back on stage in the year 2012 when the new Women’s Physique Division is supposed to be implemented into the IFBB Pro League. For more info. on my life experience of living with Crohn’s Disease follow my Blog’s here in the Blog Category called “Living with Crohn’s Disease”

Happy Holidays everyone. I will follow up with 2010′s most memorable events…please feel free to comment with you’re most memorable events in the world or your life.
